Getting To and From the Airports
Melbourne has two airports:
- Melbourne Tullamarine (MEL) airport is used by Qantas, Virgin, some Jetstar flights, and international airlines
- Avalon airport is used exclusively by Jetstar.
Avalon Airport
Avalon Airport is closer to Geelong than Melbourne, being about 50 km (40 mins) from Melbourne and about 20 km (15 mins) from Geelong. A taxi to Melbourne may cost $80 or more, but there is also a bus option, and hire cars can be picked up from the airport. See the airport website for more information.
The remaining information on this page relates to Melbourne Tullamarine (MEL) airport.
Melbourne Tullamarine (MEL)
Melbourne Airport is some distance from the city centre. There is (rather embarrassingly) no train link between the airport and city centre. Use Skybus or taxis to get into the city.
Skybus
Visit the Skybus Super Shuttle at http://www.skybus.com.au. Tickets cost $13 one way. Skybus operates 7 days a week, including public holidays. An average trip between airport and city takes 20 minutes.
Skybus departs every 15 minutes between 06:00 and 21:30 and half hourly or hourly at other times. Plan your trip to allow enough time for airline check-in requirements.
Skybus Super Shuttle operates from two locations at Melbourne Airport
- Ground floor of Melbourne Airport right outside the South terminal (Virgin Blue)
- Ground floor at the Qantas Domestic terminal
The Skybus city terminal is located at Spencer Street, Melbourne, in the temporary coach terminal area at the northern end of Spencer Street Railway Station (near the corner of Lonsdale Street and Spencer Street).
Taxis
Taxis are available from the ground floor level of Melbourne Airport, outside the International Terminal both domestic Terminals. Expect to pay around A$35 to A$40 for the 25-minute trip into the centre of Melbourne. A $2.00 taxi parking fee applies at Melbourne Airport. This $2.00 per vehicle fee only applies to passengers leaving Melbourne Airport from a taxi rank.
Public Buses
Information about public buses travelling to and from the airport to various parts of Melbourne and regional centres in Victoria can be found here.
Rental Cars
Melbourne Airport has five car rental companies located on-site. All have offices on the ground floor of the Short Term Car Park, and information desks in the Melbourne Airport domestic terminals. Contact the companies direct for current rates.
